BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Sometimes it takes a little nudging and some inspiration for young girls to discover their potential. Saturday, a national program paid a visit to the Southern Tier to do just that. 'Girls Take Charge' brought together more than 80 girls from the region for their fourth annual conference.
Middle school and high school girls took part in activities and discussions led by Binghamton University female students. Organizers say their goal is for participants to walk away with confidence and tools for success.
"The sky is the limit. You can do anything in life and you can't give up, and any obstacle that comes in front of you can get past it if you just stay confident with yourself,” said Venise Woolfolk, Johnson City Middle School student.
"My thought was if we designed this program and taught the girls the skills that we know women leaders possess, like persistence, never giving up and they got to practice those skills earlier on, wouldn't they be able to just jump start their success,” said Beth Mooney, Girls Take Charge Director.
Girls Take Charge is part of the national non-profit organization, Learning to Lead.
