ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- You don't normally think of a science and math challenge taking place in a grocery store, but that's exactly what happened Monday night in the back room of the Tops Market in North Syracuse.
The DemandTec Retail Challenge is a college scholarship competition sponsored by Tops. Teenagers from schools throughout the area were given a real-world merchandizing problem and asked to come up with how they would deal with them. Monday night, the top three teams presented their results to a panel of judges.
"Really a lot of clever thinking in terms of how to best manage these categories. Some of the solutions we've seen have been very surprising, very innovative, high quality analysis of how to best manage these retail categories," said Sean McCauley, Senior Director of Analytics at DemandTec.
And the winning team was from Fayetteville-Manlius High School. They took home a $2,000 scholarship.
