Summertime eating does not necessarily have to blow a diet, according to Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of Self Magazine. Her new book, "The Drop 10 Diet," shows how favorite meals can be made with healthier foods.
"First of all, I really like to think of it as a way of eating, because it is more than just dieting, it's a way of adding to your plate to lose the weight," says Danziger. "We have 30 'superfoods,' each of which has been proven to rev your metabolism and help your body burn fat."
Protein, fiber and vitamins make the difference between junk food and superfood.
"We've created an edamame dip and edamame, of course, is a protein. And what's great about that, it's full of fiber, it's also full of Vitamin C," says Danziger. "Fiber actually helps your body not hold on to calories, and the Vitamin C revs your metabolism and protein burns and builds out muscle."
Popcorn is a good choice for a snack.
"If you air pop it, it's only 30 calories per cup and give kids the choice of making it a salty snack with some parmesan," says Danziger. "I point to the parmesan because we know there is more calcium in parmesan than any other cheese. It's the king of calcium. Women who had, I think it was 1,250 mg of calcium a day, shed belly fat doing nothing else."
This new way of eating also doesn't neglect meat-eaters.
"Everyone's always shocked to hear that steak, especially lean steak, is a superfood. Your body actually requires more calories to eat protein," says Danziger. "Another great fit, if you're going to somebody's house, is to stop by the farmer's market and get a cornucopia of fruits. I call this 'nature's candy.' Antioxidants and all the healthy fiber in this is going to fill you up and rev your metabolism."
"The Drop 10 Diet" is full of great tips from a woman who knows a lot about food and certainly knows how to have fun with it too.
