HOGANSBURG, N.Y. -- A 40,000 square foot expansion is now open at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino.
The new "Cascades" gaming floor houses slots, table games and a high-limit room. It adds about 50 to 75 jobs.
The casino plays a major role in the region's economy so members of the Malone, Massena and St. Lawrence County chambers of commerce were all on hand to commemorate the opening of the new gaming floor.
With the new expansion, leaders say the future of their tribe is bright.
"I believe the tribe is running full circle, working each and every hour so that one day we will be able to care for our needs, help will be given and problems will be dealt with appropriately. I see the day where our tribe will be self-sufficient," said Randy Hart, tribal chief.
As part of the expansion, a new hotel is being built at the casino as well as a new bingo hall. The hotel will open in March.
