It's an annual campaign promoting free cancer screenings for uninsured women in Onondaga County. The annual "Love Yourself" campaign reminds women without health insurance to take advantage of a free mammogram. Our Brad Vivacqua is outside of the Onondaga County Health Department with more.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Onondaga County health officials say they want more women living in the county to take advantage of these free cancer screenings. After all, the American Cancer Society estimates that one in eight women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime.
This campaign encourages uninsured women between 40 and 64 to make an appointment during the month of February. Women can also register online for the first time this year and will be referred to a medical provider in the county.
The program offers women in the same age group to get a free cervical cancer exam. Health officials say too many women will go without an annual screening.
Onondaga County Health Services Coordinator Jenny Dickinson said, "The main message we're getting across is don't wait. A lot of women will wait until the timing is right, especially the uninsured, they'll wait until they have a job, or they can save up the money. Don't wait to take care of your health."
Uninsured women and men between 50 and 64 years old can also get free colorectal screenings.
You're encouraged to sign up for an appointment by calling (315) 435-3653.
