The Wineglass Marathon has been a staple in the Corning community for more than 30 years and it will continue to be a draw, thanks to the support of local sponsors. YNN's Katie Husband has more on an announcement Wednesday that will renew a long-standing partnership and keep the event running.
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- It may not be a typical attraction like a museum or a park, but it has people coming from across the state and even the world to be here and participate. This year marks the 32nd annual Wineglass Marathon and as its reputation continues to grow, so does its sponsorship.
"Meaning, Arnot Health is now in its second year of sponsoring at the presenting level of this very exciting local, regional and national event," said Dustin Hewit, Arnot Health, director of marketing.
For this marathon, runners start in Bath or Campbell and cross the finish line on Market Street in Corning. They've now extended their partnership with Arnot Health for three more years, showing what a highlight the marathon really is to the community.
"It just demonstrates our impact and growth as a race nationally and even internationally," said Sheila Sutton, Wineglass Marathon co-director.
Arnot officials say the decision was easy because ultimately, it's about people making healthy living choices.
"Marathon runners run a real long distance, 26.2 miles is no joke, however, anyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle is taking an enormous step toward staying healthy, living long and doing the right thing for themselves and their families," said Hewit.
Which is what thousands of people plan on doing this fall when the race is scheduled.
"Currently, are doubled registration numbers over last year at this time and that includes the full marathon, the half marathon and the 5K ,which was a new event that we added last year," said Sutton.
October should be no different this year with fall foliage, crisp air and thousands of runners taking part in a 30 plus year tradition that has a continuing partner.
