MOHAWK VALLEY -- In the Mohawk Valley, Sandy's high winds ripped down dozens of trees and power lines, leaving thousands of people in the dark into Tuesday.

Fire crews and National Grid have been working nonstop to solve the issue. But the number of downed lines has put a lot of strain on small volunteer fire departments.

“To date, we've had 120 calls for the year, most of which are EMS, probably 30 fires. And last night we did 16. So it's like a quadruple in the one number for the one night,” said 1st Assistant Chief Richard Nichols, Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Oneida and Herkimer counties had no reported injuries from the storm, and only a few cases of property damage.
