NEW YORK -- Governor Cuomo says more than 90 percent of Long Island families are still in the dark.
He says restoring power is a major challenge, and in fact, he's receiving help from power crews from as far away as Texas.
Cuomo says the National Guard took part in 156 rescue missions and saved hundreds of people but that more than a dozen people died because of the storm.
"That number would have been much larger if it wasn't for the truly historic and courageous activities of our first responders all across the state," said Cuomo. "I saw people put themselves in the way of danger. If it wasn't for the National Guard, State Police and the NYPD, the loss of life would have been much greater.”
He says he hopes with JFK International Airport will re-open Wednesday. LaGuardia will remain closed because of extensive damage.
