A gunmen opened fire inside a Binghamton immigration service center Friday killing 13 people, and critically wounding four others before turning the gun on himself.
Police say the "obviously premediated" shooting rampage happened around 10:30 Friday morning at the American Civic Association in downtown Binghamton.
On Saturday, authorities identified the lone gunman as Jiverly Wong, 41, of nearby Johnson City. A law enforcement official said the man had used the alias of Voong in the past.
Authorities said Wong barricaded the rear door of the American Civic Association with a car before entering through the front door firing his weapon. Police say people were taking citizenship exams.
Investigators said that one receptionist who was shot and wounded, pretended to be dead, and called 911. Police also said that 26 people hid in the basement's boiler room. In total, 37 people were removed safely from the building.
At a 4:30 p.m. news conference Friday, Governor David Paterson expressed his sorrow for those who lost loved ones, and thanked all of the police agencies who responded to the scene.
"When are we going to be able to curb the kind of violence that is so fraught and so rapid that we can't even keep track of the incidents? I am hopeful this case will be brought to immediate resolution," Paterson said.
Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan said his community is safe despite Friday's incident.
"This is the kind of thing that rocks a community to its core," said Binghamton's Mayor Matt Ryan. "But I think it's the kind of community that will respond. It appears to be the situation where it was one disturbed individual, who obviously acted out in a very disturbed manner. Not reflective of our community at large. We have a very low violent crime rate.'
Police are not giving a motive for the attack, and his connection to the immigration center is unclear. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
