CANTON--What do you value most at Canton School District? What would you hate to see cut from the school? Would you rather a major tax increase or program and position cuts? Those are some of the questions residents had to answer at Canton School District’s public forum Thursday night. Questions that Superintendent Gregory said need to be answered to help the Board of Education make some very difficult decisions.

“Across the board everyone had the opportunity to hear viewpoints that were not necessarily readily accepted by others but nevertheless were given the courtesy to do so and everyone had the chance to contribute,” said Gregory.

Despite the gloom that was shared at the beginning of the forum about the upcoming budget. Residents seemed optimistic and ready to share their views and ideas for the future of the school.

Lisa Elliott, a Canton Resident said, “I enjoyed not only being able to say how I felt but to also hear the variety of comments from the people at my table.”

And not only did the administrators learn from the public, but the participants were able to learn from each other.

“We had a young person at our table who was a junior in high school and it was interesting to hear what he thought was important. And he did have some different ideas,” said Elliott.

“I think the forum was fabulous. I was extremely pleased with our students who served as facilitators. I think the public got a very close up view about what this is all about,” said Gregory.

Residents say they hope the district will take the community's opinions, values, and concerns into consideration to guide them in the decisions ahead.

Canton School District will hold another public forum on March 22nd at 7pm in the high school library. Anyone can attend. An RSVP is requested but not required.
