SYRACUSE, N.Y. - NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and Cato native Regan Smith hasn't forgotten his roots, and he proved it with a visit to his old Microd track at the New York State Fairgrounds on Thursday.
Smith, who is back in the area for the Finger Lakes 355 at Watkins Glen International this weekend, says he started racing with the Syracuse Microd Club at 4 1/2 years old and still has fond memories, including crashing through a tire wall on his first-ever trip around the oval track.
During an interview session Smith talked about coming back home, the turnaround his team has experienced since Todd Berrier took over as crew chief for the struggling team two races ago, and what it has been like being based in Colorado this year with the wildfires and movie theater shooting taking place.
