Week 5 Training: Finding it hard to feel motivated

Sunday, February 13, 2011

It may not have felt like I was working out while ice skating yesterday, but today, it certainly feels like I worked out a lot. My calves are so sore. It’s a bit pathetic, but I guess that’s what getting in shape is all about.

I’m at the ski hill again today. It’s another crazy day with a lot of lessons and not a lot of instructors, so I end up teaching four hours. I am absolutely exhausted, and don’t know how I’m going to have the endurance to do Iron Girl.

I have not been feeling any motivation to work out. I’m so exhausted and just can’t bring myself to go to the gym. It’s so discouraging. I took Monday and Tuesday off. Today Jim and I go for a brief walk, but I’m not feeling well, so it doesn’t last long.

I’m motivated to go to the gym, but by the time I arrive, I seem to have lost that motivation. I start by running on the treadmill, but my knees are hurting too much for that. I decide to try some biking, but that isn’t really striking my fancy today either. So far, I’ve been on the treadmill for two minutes and a bike for eight minutes. I decide to give the elliptical a try. I have much better luck with that, but only use the machine for 16 minutes. I do a couple minutes of abdominal strength training and call it a day. I am still exhausted and in pain. It’s so hard to get motivated.

I’ve definitely snapped out of my funk a bit. I take the “Total Body Conditioning with Step” class at the gym, and that’s actually a lot of fun. It’s a mix to strength training and step aerobics. It’s really funny because some of the steps are challenging, and I keep getting all tripped up. I definitely feel like I’m making a food out of myself. But it is fun.

I’m at the ski hill again today. My dad came up to go skiing with me. We were initially going to a “Save the Peak” Breast Cancer Research Ski Race, but because of the bad weather and high winds, it was cancelled. So we decide to go back to Song. It’s an absolute blizzard and freezing. But there are still lessons. I actually am able to get out of teaching in the morning, so we ski straight for two hours. And it’s great. We get a lot of runs in. By 1pm, my knees are starting to hurt again, and I’m hoping to assign lessons and go home. But of course, that’s not going to happen. There aren’t any snowboard instructors, so I have to boot up and teach a never-ever lesson. I’m dreading it because it’s so tough to teach beginner snowboarders, but I’m pleasantly surprised and end up teaching two really talented kids. So I guess the lesson was worth it. It was fun and easy.
