Training Week 4: Sarah Bettinger

Monday-Quick run after school. Was a rather uneventful two mile run at decent speeds, but I was so not in the mood to do anything. Glad I did but was an effort. Just not a fun workout.

Tuesday- Amazing workout! Love swim nights! Was in the pool first. We did 25 meters of each drill fast and then did 6 sets of 150 meters with 30 second rests in between for a total of 1200 meters. It always amazes me how quickly this goes by and how invigorating the water feels. After the crushing workout in the pool we headed into the gym for core. Lately Katey has been working at core circuits where we rotate in between three stations with 6 to 7 drills each. Tonight the drills were amped up! I joined a group of Rhiannon, Jim, Brandon, Nicole, and Katie C. We all pushed each other and had a blast. Within moments we were drenched in sweat! Temps have been ridiculous (hadn’t realized I had moved to the hot steamy South!!!) this week! We did burpees…a torture I had never done before…jump down and out do a push-up, jump back up and then into the air…whoa! Talk about intense! At another station we did jump squats and joked around and did another set on top of the first, just to be hard-core! Out of all these workouts I think my favorite must be the partner push-up… you go down for a push-up then reach out and slap high five with your partner across from you…a little celebration for each one! This was just a great night and a great work-out!

Wednesday- Got a call at work that my son was sick and needed to be picked up from school. Husband was out of town this week in Texas, so I could not go to coach tonight. Enjoyed the snuggles with the little guy but missed coaching and the team.

Thursday- Little guy is still running fever and I am sick as well. Not a great day in the Bettinger household. Since I really do not have time to be sick (really interferes with training!) I am doing everything in my power to knock this out, vitamin C, B12…ginger water…anything and everything!

Friday- Feeling blah, but forging through and pretending I am not sick. Helped out a friend, for a rather intense apartment moving session in the rain…five hours moving insanely heavy furniture up three flights of stairs…I considered this an intense weight lifting core session and a swim session!!

Saturday-Biking at Onondaga Lake Parkway- We started out at Longbranch with a quick run down of the drills we would be doing then headed out. I was in charge of the A group (faster beginners). We would be doing a loop down the parkway, to the dog trail, and then to the west-side trail. On the Parkway we did pace line drills, ramping into harder gears. Our group was large and ended up splitting into three different groups. I cycled back and forth between the groups and ended up getting in an amazing work out of speed intervals as I ran around to the different groups…also almost lost my voice shouting out drill orders…perhaps my best quality as a coach is that I am rather good at being loud! The groups did well on the parkway and dog trail. The real challenge came when we went to the West-side trail. The storm knocked an insane amount of branches and leaves on the path. The trail was ridiculously slippery and hazardous. The athletes rocked it though! Not gonna lie it was a little hairy though trying to keep an eye on everyone and not run into a branch and wipe out myself! When we finished with our laps around the park we headed back for the “Circle of Death” on the grass at Longbranch. The group did well and lots of laughs all around! The fun that this group has is magical! Half my ab workouts are from laughing so hard! Looking forward to the week ahead.
