Training Week 10: Sarah Bettinger

Tuesday: Jamesville Beach Coaching Night…tonight I realized how much I miss our indoor training in that I miss getting to see everyone…now that we are outside we have split into smaller groups. However, I also love outdoor training…tonight I led a group of beginning swimmers that like a challenge and we decided we could do the same distances as our intermediate counterparts…was amazing to go that far in the wetsuit and the group did fantastic with a rough total of 800 meters! Well over what is needed for IronGirl! The group also did a fun set of mass swim starts and exits of the water…excitement is skyrocketing as I can see all the little details falling into place for the season!

Wednesday: CNY Tri night: Decided that since I will be doing this next week with the athletes that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it myself tonight to help remember the course and any little pointers. Had a blast and did one lap of the swim (had forgotten you could do two!) Was doing great on the bike till the second lap when my rear wheel went a little screwy and I had to back off the speed. When I returned I got right on the run (I have decided to practice without socks on both the bike and run to see how it feels…as a way to shave time off transition). The run went really well…not super fast but faster than last year for sure! Feeling excited for what this seasons races bring!

Saturday: Gillie Girl Course Bike: This was the first time I have seen the Gillie Girl course…I have to say it is a beautiful course! I loved the feel of the ride this morning! The hills in the beginning let me pick up speed I haven’t felt on the bike in awhile! However, since I was also gonna have to hop in the car and drive to my sister’s wedding in Placid…I backed off for the first half on m speed which also allowed me to ride with a few of the athletes and actually get a little caught up too! I have missed them! Those few weeks off at the end of June have thrown me way off! On the loop back I decided to kick it up a notch and did…until the last two miles! The last two miles (which are not on the actual course) kicked my butt…I was trying a new technique of spinning half way up then standing and grinding and was doing great but had just gotten done doing this up a rather large hill and had not caught my breath yet when I turned a corner and BAM! There was an even bigger hill! I really struggled with it and it may have been due to lack of sleep (was going on 4 hours) or just poor planning…but it was ugly! Drenched in sweat by the return! Still a fantastic ride though!

Sunday: Lake Placid: Preparations are already underway for IronMan LP next weekend…it is so exciting and inspiring! I get up after a night of dancing at my sister’s wedding and ran the loop around Mirror lake…it is truly magical! I spend the rest of the day kayaking/paddle boating and swimming with family…a truly awesome/exhausting summer day!
