BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Celebrating 100 years of progress, the Broome-Tioga Branch of the NAACP is joining the national celebration of a century of service for the civil rights organization.

Saturday, they held their biannual Freedom Fund Dinner, where they also acknowledged local leaders for their efforts to advance civil rights.

Among the honorees was President's Award winner Lea Webb, the youngest person and first African-American elected to Binghamton's city council. She is also the leader of the city's north side grocery project.

"The organization as a whole and this country has made tremendous milestones from passing the civil rights act, to affirmative action, to electing our first African American president. All of these things that have happened in the last hundred years and to be part of that celebration is truly honoring for me,” said Lea Webb, (D) Binghamton City Council.

The Broome-Tioga Chapter of the NAACP was chartered in 1922.
