BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- A virtual reality game helps a local organization raise tens of thousands for breast cancer research.

The Southern Tier Health Link presented a check to the American Cancer Society Tuesday. Health Link was able to raise $64,000 through an online computer-generated virtual world called Second Life.

Over a 72 hour period, they encouraged users of the site to visit the their virtual Breast Cancer Awareness Center and to buy limited edition pink and white horse collectables to raise donations. Cancer Society reps say they're thrilled for the contribution, which means more resources toward finding a cure.

"Ninety-eight percent of women will survive breast cancer when it is detected early. We are extremely thankful to Southern Tier Health Link for their extraordinary donation to help continue our fueling this fight," said Diana Cahill, American Cancer Society Regional Vice President.

The $64,000 donation is the highest amount the website has ever raised for a single charity within 72 hours.
