BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Area students join others around the world in taking a stance against bullying.

Students at Homer Brink Elementary School in Endwell donned pink shirts and ribbons Monday, in honor of International Stand up to Bullying Day. The idea to wear pink stemmed from an incident in Canada in which a high school boy was taunted for wearing the color to school.

Students at Homer Brink had been building up to the day, learning about the impact of bullying through lessons and skits.

School leaders say they hope the program teaches the students learn to become support systems for each other.

"To stand up for each other. And that's what the whole stand up against bullying is. That when you see someone that is being made fun of or when you see someone that is being bullied, being a bystander is participating in the bullying. And we want the kids to learn to stand up for each other," said Pat Straccioni.

School officials say they plan for the program to become an annual tradition.
