Sheriff deputy's son shot by police; father offers apologies

BARTON, N.Y. -- The son of a former Onondaga County Sheriff's candidate is in serious condition after being shot by state police Saturday night.
Toby Shelley confirms that his son, 23-year old Joel Shelley of Marietta, was involved in a confrontation with police and was shot in the town of Barton. According to investigators, troopers were interviewing the 23-year old when he threatened them with a shotgun and took off in his car. Police later spotted him on State Route 34 in Barton, but Shelley refused to stop. When he finally pulled over, troopers say Shelley got out of his car and approached them with the shotgun...forcing them to fire.
Shelley was taken to Robert Packer Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
Charges are pending against him.
Shelley's father, who ran unsuccessfully for Onondaga County Sheriff offered his apologies to the police community during a phone interview with YNN.
Toby Shelley recently announced his plans to run for a seat in the county legislature.
