OWEGO, N.Y. -- An area school district has gotten top honors for its work preparing students for college.
Owego Free Academy has been given the top ranking for Aspirational Performance Measure for Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties. The award measures how well seniors are prepared for college.
The ranking is based on whether students need remedial work in college and the school's overall English and math Regents scores. But district leaders say it's all dependent on the students having a strong foundation.
"It also reflects the kind of work that goes on beginning in elementary and middle school. The middle school is sending well prepared students to the high school. This is a credit to the whole district, not just to the high school English and math teachers," said Superintendent Dr. Bill Russell.
The award is given out by the State Board of Regents.
