JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- The DEC said it has already cleaned up the brownfield sites in both Ellisburg and Adams, and both are ready for development.
The DEC is proposing that no further action needs to be taken on the former Ellisburg Country store and the former GL Thomas and Sons feed mill sites that had been contaminated with fuels and asbestos. The agency said the sites are safe and ready for anyone that wants to build there.
In fact, the Adams Fire Department is already hoping to expand out over the feed mill site near its current home.
"The department with the Village of Adams removed the building, the asbestos, dug out soils, dug out multiple buried tanks, piping and took away a lot of contaminated soils. In essence, remediated the site back to residential use," said Peter Ouderkirk, Adams Project Manager.
The DEC is hosting public hearings for both sites before the "no further action" ruling becomes official. The meeting in Ellisburg is next Tuesday night at the Ellisburg Town Hall and the meeting in Adams is set for March 8th at the village offices.
