SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse University has issued a comment about a Yahoo Sports story out Monday, alleging the university allowed basketball players to play despite testing positive for drug use.
The University said an inquiry is underway and it does not involve any current players.
According to Yahoo! Sports, 10 players since 2001 have tested positive for banned substances and all of them were allowed to practice and play, a violation of the school's own internal drug policy, which would have required the players to be suspended.
The article cites anonymous sources and said some of the players may not have even known about their ineligibility.
In a statement, the university said:
“In accordance with NCAA regulations, it is the University’s practice to self-report possible violations to the NCAA. We self-reported issues with drug testing to the NCAA, and there is currently an ongoing inquiry.
The inquiry does not involve any current SU student-athletes. To ensure the integrity of the ongoing process, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
