UTICA, N.Y. -- This week, the Senate passed a postal reform bill that, if it becomes law, would keep a processing center open in Utica.

Back in November, the Postal Service said it plans to close the Pitcher Street Processing Center sometime this spring as part of a nationwide cost-saving plan.

The Postal Service said closing the facility and moving its workload to Syracuse, would save an estimated $2 million a year. But the 21st Century Postal Service Act, which passed in the Senate Wednesday, would prevent the Postal Service from closing or merging any processing facility which was found to be efficient in a previous consolidation study. That includes the Pitcher Street center.

Senator Charles Schumer says if the bill becomes law, it would prevent the loss of nearly 200 mail service jobs in Central New York.
