SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The City of Syracuse is exploring the possibility of another grocer taking the place of the Pond Street Wegmans when it closes this month, while it is also in the process of filling the vacancy left by P&C Markets when its Valley Plaza location closed on the South Side.

The city is confident that work will begin within the next month or two to move a Tops Market into the site.

Although it is a move forward, Ben Walsh, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, points out that filling the Valley Plaza vacancy is a project that Mayor Stephanie Miner considered a priority at the beginning of her term.

"Here we are two and a half years later, and we're very close to seeing that come to fruition, but that gives as an indication of often times how challenging it can be to fill these spaces, so I think we all need to manage our expectations. We may not be able to get something overnight," said Walsh.

Currently the city is in talks with local and national grocers such as Nojaims Markets and Price Right to fill the Wegmans space that will be left vacant on Pond and First North streets.
