ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Special Olympics torch also passed through Central New York. Law enforcement officers from the DeWitt Police Department ran with the “Flame of Hope,” traveling from Fayetteville to Holy Cross Church at the Town of DeWitt's city line.

Twelve officers from the town's Police Department braved the heat and uphill route to deliver the torch.

Chief Eugene Conway says the department looks forward to the run and other Special Olympic fundraisers each year.

"We've actually been supporting Special Olympics for a few years. We not only participate in the torch run, but in the winter we have a contingent of officers that participate in the polar plunge. It's a great organization, obviously the fact that the torch passes through DeWitt is just added incentive for us to come out and carry the torch from one end of the town of DeWitt to the other," said Conway.

The 2012 Law Enforcement Torch Run has been dedicated to fallen New York State Trooper Amanda Anna and Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Kurt Wyman.

The run is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics in the world.
