CANTON, N.Y. -- Electricity in the Canton area has been brought to a major standstill.

National Grid believes a large power outage in and around Canton was caused by a circuit breaker failure south of St. Lawrence University Monday afternoon. They estimate power could remain out for 12 hours or more.
