JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Police in Alexandria Bay have released the name of the man they say drowned in the St. Lawrence River over the weekend. He has been identified as Michael Puchek, 22, of Lighthouse Point, Florida.

Authorities say Puchek was in town working on Fort Drum with a civilian contractor.

Police say on Saturday night, several 911 calls came from people saying they heard someone shouting for help behind River Hospital. But by the time crews arrived, the man could no longer be heard.

A search was conducted that night, with no results. Dive teams found Puchek's body Sunday.

Police say while they are not completely sure of the situation surrounding the drowning, they are telling people to be careful and safe on the St. Lawrence.

"I wouldn't be out there by myself. I'd have a buddy with me, especially being around the water. We believe the individual was by himself. Especially if they'd been drinking, they need to stay off the water," said Alexandria Bay Police Chief James Marshall Sr.

Police say they will learn more after an autopsy is performed on Puchek's body.
