NEW YORK -- The polls are open in several villages across the region today, as the second round of village elections is being held. In most cases, the polls opened at noon and will close at 9 p.m.

With only a handful of villages having contested races, voter turnout is expected to be low. Despite that, officials say it is still more important to vote in local elections than it is in a national one.

"If you know the candidates and you know their position then it’s important to be here to know them. A lot of people don't even know them. They say, ‘Oh, is he the mayor? What does he look like?’ Because they don't bother because there's no coverage," said Betty Marks, Liverpool Elections Inspector.
