SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- He thought it was a family trip to the zoo, but Zachary Shaw, 8, got the surprise of a lifetime on Saturday when he arrived at Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Make-A-Wish was there, waiting to surprise Zach and his family with a trip to Disney World. It has been Zach's dream to go, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation made it come true.

Since he was three-months-old, Zach has been getting blood transfusions every three weeks in order to treat a rare disease. He has diamond blackfan anemia, a bone marrow malfunction where he does not produce red blood cells, therefore he cannot make his own blood.

His parents said that it has not been easy, but they are proud of their boy.

"He's been through a lot, he's a tough guy. For all he's gone through, to give his sisters and his mom and dad a trip means everything to him," said Benjamin Shaw, Zach's father.

"He's been such a trooper through everything. He's grown up at the hospital. They've all watched him and they all love him. I don't know what we'd do without him. And all those wonderful blood donors out there that keep him alive, you're our heroes," said Zach's mother, Bridget Shaw.

The Shaw family will be heading to Florida for their trip in three weeks.
