ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Four decades after flood waters from Hurricane Agnes devastated the Twin Tiers, a group commemorates the historic event.

Saturday night, Jennifer Fais, a local artist and member of the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed, built a sculpture made of river driftwood. The artistic piece featured small candles and personal cards celebrating the accomplishments of friends and businesses since the '72 flood.

The driftwood sculpture was tethered to the shore and floated out into the river to pay tribute to the anniversary. "It's really all about the river and we are trying to certainly respect people's views of what it was like 40 years ago but to look ahead to the future. So, we thought a fun get together was a way to do that," Fais said.

All of the commemorative cards were sponsored and the funds raised by the River Friends will be used to protect and promote local waterways.
