UNITED STATES -- It's the next best thing to actually standing on the Red Planet. The panoramic image released by NASA is actually made up of 817 pictures from the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The pictures were taken over a four-month period in an area NASA refers to as "Greeley Haven."

Scientists say the photo is shown with artificial color to help different materials stand out from one another. NASA says the image comes soon after the rover reached its 3,000 day on Mars earlier this month.
