BREWERTON, N.Y. -- Police say bath salts may have played a role in the death of a man whose body was found in the water along Oneida Lake.

The body of Michael Thompson, 34, of Brewerton was found Monday evening near Castaways Riverside Restaurant. The restaurant's owner found the body underneath a dock and called police.

Thompson was last seen at 3 a.m. Saturday. Police say at that time, he was acting strangely, yelling and trying to enter people's homes in the area. That behavior is what has led them to believe he was under the influence of drugs.

"These bath salts are not something that people use in their tubs to make their skin feel good or to make them smell nice. These are analog, designer drugs that are created by chemists and sold at head shops by people who are more interested in making money than the health and welfare of these young people," said New York State Police Captain Mark Lincoln.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine a cause of death.

State Police are asking anyone with any information to contact the State Police headquarters.
