Texting while driving numbers released
STATEWIDE -- It has been one year since New York State made texting while driving a primary offense.
Since then, the state said police have issued more than 20,000 tickets. That's about four times more than 2011 when texting was a secondary offense.
Tompkins County issued the most tickets in the Southern Tier with 139. That's compared to the 20 tickets issued a year ago.
In other Southern Tier regions, Steuben County issued 108 tickets compared to just 14 last year. 103 tickets were handed out in Broome County. Chemung County had 92 and Cortland County rounds out the top five on the list with 85 tickets.
