ROME, N.Y. -- Rome Police are investigating a drive by shooting on Friday night that left a child injured. April Donaldson said she and her boyfriend were smoking on the porch of their Park Drive home around 9:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots. Her boyfriend tackled her to the ground, but shots went inside the house, hitting her 11-year-old daughter.

One bullet went through the girl's cheek and grazed her neck, another hit her in the arm. Donaldson asked that we not photograph her face, but she said her daughter was only shot, trying to look out for her younger brother.

"She was in the kitchen making something to eat and she had, I guess, when she heard the first shot, she ran to her brother. As she was running through the living room is when the second bullet caught her in her arm," explained Donaldson.

Donaldson said her daughter is okay and out of the hospital, but she doesn't understand why someone would shoot at them. Rome Police said they believe the suspect's vehicle was a gold or silver colored sedan.

Police are still investigating the shooting. They're asking anyone with information to call (315) 339-7715 or send a tip through the department's website, www.romepd.com.
