BREWERTON, N.Y. -- It was an early morning in the water for athletes in Onondaga County. The Athleta Iron Girl Syracuse Triathlon was held at Oneida Shores Park on Sunday.

Competitors begin with a 600 meter swim, followed by an 18 mile bike ride, and finished with a 5K run. This is just one of 13 Iron Girl events around the country, and organizers said it has made a big impact in Central New York in just a few years.

"We came here four years ago, there were no other women's event, there were no big triathlons at that time. Here's what's happened, we started with 450 women our first year, we are now 1,400 women, and now we max out the venue," said Judy Molnar, Iron Girl Vice President. "The interesting thing about it here in Syracuse, I truly believe it's transformed the community in a lot of ways."

Molnar said the Iron Girl sold out in just 23 hours last October.
