BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Governor Andrew Cuomo has accepted the 2020 application for Binghamton University approving the development of a Smart Energy Research and Development Facility worth $70 million.

The Smart Energy research facility is going to be built on the already existing ITC campus near BU's main campus. At the facility, students and faculty will continue to focus on green technologies like solar and lithium power.

This $70 million project is expecting to create more than 840 jobs in both the public and private sectors in the Southern Tier. University officials also say it will attract as many as 2,000 new students to Binghamton.
