MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A proposal to ban smoking on property owned or leased by Madison County is drawing some controversy. Members of the county Board of Supervisors discussed the proposal at a meeting Tuesday. They amended it to exclude parks and forest lands, and read a letter from the mayor of Wampsville, panning the ban as unnecessary government intrusion.

"Part of that falls on myself and different community members who it's our job to educate and get the word out there what's really going on and the facts. And the fact is that tobacco is bad for you, it causes immediate health concerns like different cancers and other diseases and secondhand smoke is just as deadly," said Joseph Wicks, Bridges Madison County Coordinator.

The public hearing on the proposed smoking ban will take place at the next Madison County Board of Supervisors meetings on September 11th.
