CHEMUNG COUNTY -- The Elmira City Council has approved funding for a new side panel fire truck to replace the Fire Department's truck at station 5, that's been out of service for about six months.

The City Council has agreed to purchase the truck from Alexis Fire Equipment Company for more than $350,000. The new truck will hold 750 gallons of water and a 400 horsepower engine.

This upgrade is needed for the department to reach West Hill residents since that area does not have a fire department. The volunteers have been using an older truck as a temporary fix.

"We have a back-up truck we've been using, but of course that's very old also and it's for backup it's not for normal wear and tear use. That will go back in to our surplus for emergencies," said Elmira Mayor Sue Skidmore.

The cost of the replacement truck has been taken out of the 2013 budget. The new truck should be built and ready by next spring.
