NATIONWIDE -- National forecasters have upgraded Isaac to a Category 1 hurricane.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Isaac gained strength Tuesday moving over warm, open waters in the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to make landfall late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

People in New Orleans are preparing for the worst, knowing the kind of destruction that type of storm can bring. A disaster declaration for Louisiana has already been declared to expedite federal help.

"Listen to your local officials and follow their directions, including if they tell you to evacuate. We are dealing with a big storm and there could be significant flooding and other damage across a large area. Now is not the time to tempt fate. Now is not the time to dismiss official's warnings," said President Obama.

Hurricane Katrina's 7th anniversary is Wednesday. The mayor of New Orleans has not ordered a mandatory evacuation as federal officials have said the rebuilt levees from Katrina are designed to handle storms stronger than Isaac.
