STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- The body of a missing woman has been discovered. Melissa Sherry, 28, was found dead Friday morning in the Town of Campbell. She was last seen on August 25th near Manning Ridge Road.
The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
A short time after the discovery of the body, a State Police helicopter had to make an emergency landing. The pilot had just finished helping with search efforts when there was an in-flight mechanical error. He was able to make a controlled, powerless descent, which resulted in a hard landing.
The helicopter pilot was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cause of that crash is under investigation.
