CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- The Oneida Nation Police Force hosted a workshop to help combat and prevent synthetic drug usage around the state. Agencies including the State Police, New York State Parks and Recreation Department, Fort Drum Military Police, and surrounding village and town police departments were all invited to participate free of charge.

The goal of the workshop was to get every agency on the same page about how to respond to the problems and health risks caused by synthetic drugs, such as bath salts. According to authorities, it is important to get medical attention immediately for those under the influence. They also stress the importance of approaching the user in the safest way possible.

"And then come with their plan of intervention in the situation, make sure they have medical emergency personnel correct, and then on top of that, how they handle them personally, so that they have the right blood flow pattern so they don't die in custody. That's a big key," explained Jackie Long, Homeland Security Representative.

Long said communities and drug treatment and prevention agencies must also be involved in combating the dangerous and addictive drugs.
