BATH, N.Y. -- More than 400 people were given their flu shot Thursday in Bath in a two hour period, putting the planning and execution skills of county officials to the test.

The goal was to vaccinate 200 people per hour between the walk-thru clinic at the Bath Fire Department and drive-thru set up at the county fairgrounds. It was a joint effort by multiple county agencies to test the ability to mass vaccinate the public quickly and efficiently. The goal of 200 people per hour was a milestone set by the New York State Department of Health for this vaccination drill.

"9/11 is what started all of this off as a way to test our emergency preparedness and if there were some terrorist or some natural disaster where we needed to get medication into the hands of our citizens, we have to find a way to do that with paid and volunteer staff and so that's what we have here," said Beverly Butts, the Steuben County Health Education Coordinator.

County officials also held an after-action meeting following the vaccination clinic to figure out how to make things go a little smoother the next time around.
