BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Broome County has snuffed out lighting up in certain parts of its parks.

The County Legislature voted unanimously Thursday to outlaw smoking in portions of its seven public parks. The resolution was put in place to try and make the areas safer for children and families.

As of now, the law does not carry any tickets or fines and visitors who are caught smoking in restricted areas will be asked to comply with the law. However, it is not a total ban as smoking will still be permitted in designated areas, such as parking lots and camp grounds.

"Some legislators wanted a complete ban, but it would have been awful hard to enforce. There are some parks that don't have a place and we didn't want people to walk into the woods to smoke, so we're trying to accommodate both people, the smokers and the non-smokers," said Broome County Legislator Jerry Marinich.

The ban will take effect as soon as it is signed in to law by the county executive.

There was also discussion at Thursday's legislative meeting about the county's road use agreement.

Lawmakers are concerned about their infrastructure regulations, especially with the decision looming on hydrofracking which could increase the use of county roadways.

Several amendments were proposed to a law that will ensure roads and bridges that have extensive truck traffic are maintained, but the resolution, and its changes, were tabled to be considered at a later date.
