ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- There won't be any Halloween treats for people who drink and drive. That's the message from Onondaga County police chiefs.

Starting Saturday, 15 police departments across the county will increase patrols. A grant from the state STOP DWI Foundation will help departments put more officers on the road.

Police say the drunk driving rate accelerates around Halloween and the day before Thanksgiving.

"They go out, they have a few drinks, and what we're hoping is that people choose to drink responsibly and choose to utilize a designated driver. The goal here, obviously for us, is we would much prefer not to arrest anyone during these crackdowns, but we really don't think that's going to be the case," said Michael Lefancheck, Baldwinsville Police Chief.

There will also be a county crackdown on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
