Two Binghamton Police officers were injured and the suspect was killed in an overnight shootout. It happened at the Days Inn near the Binghamton High School around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- There is still a lot of unanswered questions about the early morning shooting on Front Street in Binghamton on Sunday.

"I came around the corner, I saw a whole bunch of cops putting up yellow tape,” said Joyce Leigh, Binghamton Resident.

Investigators worked all day on Sunday to gather evidence to get a clear picture of what happened. Investigators were called after reports of shots fired and a man harassing hotel guests. When investigators found him, shots rang out in the Days Inn Hotel parking lot near Binghamton High School. When the dust settled, two Binghamton Police Officers were shot and the suspect was killed. Neighbors say they heard the shots.

"We were in our house and we heard gun shots and came out to see what was going on. There was lots of cop cars,” said Joe Williams, a Binghamton resident.

Steve Fetton, a Binghamton resident, added, "We thought it was fireworks, firecrackers, because they’ve been set off here before."

Neighbors say this is a relatively safe place to live, with the exception of some rowdy parties on the weekend. Still, many say they’re shocked by the shooting and that it happened to close to a high school.

"I have children too and its awful. Let's say it was in the daytime and if we had children come by. It's like the O.K. corral,” said Mark Phoreman, O2 Properties Property Manager. “People can come out and start shooting anytime they want too? This is awful, its awful. Thank god no kid was shot out here."

Nikia Williams, Binghamton resident, added, "Down on Main Street, there’s a lot of crime activity going on there. It’s shocking to me this happened so close to home."

Some residents worry that crime is on the rise.

"I think Binghamton is going downhill, you see it more and more and more, it’s kind of scary especially with children,” said Timothy Roberts, Johnson City resident.

The names of the officers and suspect have not been released yet. The police department is scheduled to hold a news conference on Monday afternoon to release more information about the shooting.
