BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Broome County Legislature has two weeks before the 2013 budget must be voted on. As that day quickly approaches, lawmakers are putting the final touches on the spending plan for next year.

The county's finance committee met with department heads from public works, aviation, and transportation to go over their respective budgets line by line to make sure all the numbers add up.

While some changes have been made to the original proposal, the zero percent tax increase County Executive Debbie Preston announced in September is still in place. Some items have also been restored, such as cuts to the BC Transit service, meaning legislators had to find other places to trim in order to make up for savings lost.

"Any of the changes that increase the budget in transit will probably be worked around, maybe in transit's budget, by reducing some other expenses, or it could be in other areas that they'll do the reduction," said Wayne Howard, chairman of the finance committee.

Increases to fares will help level some of the lost savings. The finance committee is expected to deliver a report to the full legislature next week before the budget is voted on.
