ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira City Police were on the scene all afternoon Thursday on the city's west side as they investigated reports of a body that was found on Alexander Place. It was found in the back of a black SUV, which was parked behind a home.

That vehicle could be seen being loaded onto the back of a flatbed truck and towed away.

Police released a statement late in the afternoon calling the death suspicious and stating that an investigation is underway.

Neighbors living near the scene say they are really troubled by the incident.

"I'm thinking I want to move. I don't like it here. I've been living in Elmira for 29 years and it's never been this close. It's too close for me,” said Elmira resident Melanie Hricko.

Police maintained a presence throughout the afternoon, even urging the nearby Booth Education Center to place students on lockdown for about an hour and a half. Those students, as well as the rest of the district, was dismissed on time Thursday, but police did have to escort some children living in the blocked-off area home.
