OWEGO, N.Y. -- Lockheed Martin officials say their new contract with the U.S. Navy will give them a step up on landing future work.

Lockheed was awarded a $30 million contract to upgrade the cockpits of the Navy's C-130T aircraft. The work will essentially change the cockpits from a steam gauge operating system to a more digital system.

Under the contract, Lockheed Martin can launch its digital cockpit for the first time ever. It also represents the first time the Department of Defense has awarded a contract to meet its new standards.

"What this will do, it will provide the Navy and other DoD agencies with unprecedented levels of interoperability and openness and what it does, it positions us, since we are first to market with this capability, it markets us very well for other cockpit opportunities, like the Army," said John Aebli, Lockheed Martin Director of Avionics Products.

Lockheed will develop nine initial cockpit kits. The upgrades should be completed by 2016.
