BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Four community organizations were honored for their efforts to help improve the City of Binghamton.

City officials held a ceremony Thursday in honor of "Extra Mile Month." Honorees included the Safe Streets Commission, the Northside Neighborhood Assembly, the Sunflower Park Steering Committee and VINES.

Mayor Matt Ryan says the honorees are great examples of people who have gone the extra mile to help their community. He encourages others to follow in their footsteps.

Ryan said, "It really improves not only the life of the community, but a lot of times, it will also be the best experience you will have to help other people and help your community, so thank you all and we encourage more people to come out and help our city."

Representatives from the groups received a certificate and a key to city.
