WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- A classroom of Watertown fourth graders showed us exactly what Thanksgiving is all about and do it by giving themselves a homework assignment.

Last week, the fourth grade class at Ohio Elementary decided they wanted to write letters to some supermarkets in hopes that one would be willing to donate food to a few families in the district to make sure they have a full Thanksgiving dinner. The students wrote the letters Wednesday night, their teacher put them in the mail the next day and they received an immediate response from Wal-Mart. The company sent two employees to the school Monday to deliver the food.

"We were thinking that it would be a good idea to help families and somebody thought of the idea to write letters," said student Jacmine Ford.

"It's incredibly impressive to think that students who are nine-, 10-, 11-years-old, really truly get it and they understand the importance of giving back to the community. They also talked about how one day it could be them and sometimes it has been them,” said fourth grade teacher Amy Briggs.

"They took the time to be able to write the letters, we needed to take the time to get out to the community and share our support," said Wal-Mart Assistant Manager Nancy Rust.

Three or four families in the district will be given the food and they'll have Mrs. Briggs to thank for their turkey. She wound up buying them to go along with the other food that Wal-Mart donated.
