SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- There was a line out the door to get into the Buy Local Bash Monday night.

Local merchandise, live music and food have made the event a hit after three years. It was held at Syracuse Regional Market, with close to 40 vendors on hand.

Organizers say it's great to see this kind of support for local business because shopping locally really does make a difference in the economy.

"If we were able to get people to shift just 10 percent of their spending to local independents, we could create $130 million of new economic activity, create 1,200 new jobs and have a $24 million tax impact. That's without spending a single tax dollar and a single additional dollar that we're already spending," said Chris Fowler, Executive Director of SyracuseFirst.

Statistics show that 73 percent of the money spent at an independently owned local business stays in the local economy, as opposed to 43 percent of that spent at commercial retails stores.
